Midtown carries two very different concrete stories on the same blocks: hand-laid brick streets from the early 1900s Freedmen's Town era, and brand new mid-rise slabs poured in the last decade. We never assume one prep plan fits both.

• Midtown occupies the site of Freedmen's Town, established in 1865 by formerly enslaved people who settled along what is now West Dallas Street and paved their own streets with hand-made bricks in the early 1900s.
• The elevated construction of Interstate 45 through the neighborhood in the 1950s divided the original community and displaced tens of thousands of residents, reshaping the street grid that today's Midtown development sits on.
• Today's Freedmen's Town historic designation protects only 40 of the more than 80 original blocks, and most of the neighborhood is now simply known as Midtown, filled in with newer residential and mixed-use construction.
