How a steel coating job goes

The same four steps on every piece, whatever the size.

Look at the steel

What it is, where it lives and how it fails today: rust, peeling paint, chemical splash, or bare metal that has not been protected yet.

Prepare the surface

Coatings hold or fail on the prep. Rust, mill scale, oil and old paint come off down to clean, profiled metal.

Prime

A primer goes on bare steel to bond to it and slow rust from starting underneath the finish.

Topcoat and cure

A hard, washable topcoat in the color you choose, left to cure fully before the steel goes back to work.

Why coat steel properly

Steel doesn't fail all at once. Moisture finds a scratch, rust spreads under the paint, and a repaint every season starts to cost more than the coating would have.

  • Rust has a harder time startingA sealed coating keeps water and air off bare metal, which is what starts rust.
  • A finish that cleans upA smooth topcoat wipes down instead of holding grease, mud and dust.
  • Prep decides how long it lastsClean, profiled steel under the primer is what a coating actually bonds to.
  • One color, one lookFrames, gates and parts finished the same so the whole job looks planned.

Questions about steel coating

What is the best coating for steel in Texas heat and humidity?

A common and well-proven approach is a two-coat system: an epoxy primer that bonds to clean steel, then a UV-stable urethane topcoat. Epoxy alone fades and chalks in strong sun, which is why outdoor steel usually gets a urethane finish on top.

Do you have to remove rust before coating steel?

Yes. Loose rust, mill scale, oil and failing paint have to come off first, down to clean metal. A coating over rust hides it for a while and then lifts with it.

What is the difference between epoxy and urethane on steel?

Epoxy bonds hard and resists chemicals and wear, so it makes a strong primer and base coat. Urethane holds color and gloss in sunlight and resists scuffs, so it makes the outer layer for steel that lives outdoors.

Can painted or powder coated steel be recoated?

Often, yes. The old finish is tested and scuffed or removed depending on its condition, then the new system is applied. Peeling or bubbling paint has to come off completely.

Which kinds of steel do you coat?

Trailers and truck equipment, ranch and farm steel, steel buildings and their parts, and fabricated parts from machine and fab shops. If yours isn't on that list, send a photo and ask.
