Building steel we coat

Inside and out, the parts that get wet, bumped or washed.

Columns and base plates

The bottom of the column is where moisture and forklifts do their damage.

Frames, purlins and bracing

Exposed structural steel that should look finished.

Doors, rails and stairs

Handrails, stair stringers, bollards and door frames.

Mezzanines and platforms

Steel decks and supports inside shops and warehouses.

How a steel coating job goes

The same four steps on every piece, whatever the size.

Look at the steel

What it is, where it lives and how it fails today: rust, peeling paint, chemical splash, or bare metal that has not been protected yet.

Prepare the surface

Coatings hold or fail on the prep. Rust, mill scale, oil and old paint come off down to clean, profiled metal.

Prime

A primer goes on bare steel to bond to it and slow rust from starting underneath the finish.

Topcoat and cure

A hard, washable topcoat in the color you choose, left to cure fully before the steel goes back to work.

Why coat building steel

Bare or lightly primed steel in a working building rusts where it gets wet and scuffs where it gets bumped. A coating deals with both.

  • Protection where moisture collectsColumn bases and door frames sit where water and wash-down end up.
  • Cleaner and brighterA light, washable topcoat reflects light and wipes clean.
  • Prepared properlyRust and old paint come off before priming.
  • Pairs with the floorSteel and slab can be finished together so the whole building looks complete.

Questions about steel coating

Can you coat steel columns and frames inside a working building?

Yes. Send photos and tell us how the building runs. The work is planned around how you use the space.

Why do column bases rust?

Moisture from wash-down, condensation and leaks collects at the base and the floor line, and impact scrapes the finish off there too. A coating seals the metal.

Can you finish the floor and the steel together?

New Era also coats concrete floors. Ask about doing both so the building is finished at once.

What coating is used on structural steel?

A common approach is an epoxy primer for adhesion and corrosion protection and a urethane topcoat for finish and color.

What should I send for a quote?

Photos, rough counts, and whether the building is in use during the work.

Do you serve Houston, Austin and San Antonio?

Yes, all three metro areas and the towns around them.
